Jurgen Klopp was left perplexed as Liverpool suffered a humiliating 0-2 defeat to Atalanta at Anfield on Tuesday evening. After a goalless first half, Liverpool collapsed in the second period, conceding twice in quick succession to Josip Iličić and Robin Gosens.
Liverpool's defense, which has been a source of concern for Klopp all season, was once again exposed. Atalanta took full advantage of the Reds' defensive frailties, scoring twice from well-worked counterattacks. Klopp admitted after the game that his team "deserved to lose" and was "bewildered" by their poor performance.
The defeat leaves Liverpool with just three points from their first three Champions League group games. With games against Ajax and Midtjylland still to come, Klopp's side now faces an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout stages.
Atalanta, meanwhile, moved into top spot in Group D with their second win of the campaign. Gian Piero Gasperini's side will now fancy their chances of reaching the next round of the competition.
Liverpool will be hoping to bounce back from their disappointing Champions League performance when they travel to Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday.
