A Trailblazing Politician and Artist

Breaking Barriers and Making History

Olivia Chow is a politician, organizer, and artist who has made history as the first racialized person elected mayor of Toronto. Her election in 2014 marked a significant milestone in the city's history, as she became the first Asian woman to hold the office.

Chow's political career began in 1988 when she married Jack Layton, a member of Toronto's city council. In 1997, she was elected to the Ontario legislature as the MPP for Trinity-Spadina. She served as an MPP until 2014, when she was elected mayor.
