Wildfires in Deschutes National Forest: Evacuations Expanded and Closures Still in Place

Evacuations Expanded

The Deschutes National Forest has expanded evacuation orders as the Milli Fire continues to burn out of control. An evacuation order was issued for the following areas: Upper Deschutes River from the Forest Service boundary at Metolious River to Lake Billy Chinook, and south to the Deschutes County line. An evacuation order was also issued for the following areas north of the Deschutes River: Along the Cascade Lakes Highway from Mount Bachelor to Sunriver, and from Century Drive to Fall River Road.

Closures in Place

The following areas are closed due to the Milli Fire: The Deschutes National Forest, including the Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, and Broken Top Wilderness areas; the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway; and the High Cascades National Recreation Trail.

Details of the Ongoing Fire

The Milli Fire was sparked by lightning on July 29. As of August 4, the fire has burned 18,963 acres and is 0% contained. The fire is burning in heavy timber and brush, and is spreading rapidly due to hot and dry conditions. Over 800 firefighters are on scene battling the blaze, and aircraft are also being used to support ground crews.

Safety Precautions for Residents

Residents in the affected areas should follow the evacuation orders and stay out of closed areas. If you are in an evacuation area, please leave immediately.
