Taiwan's Strongest Earthquake in 25 Years Claims Multiple Lives

Nine Confirmed Dead as Rescue Efforts Continue

Powerful Quake Brings Tunnels Down, Trapping Dozens

A devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake has rocked the east coast of Taiwan on Wednesday, the strongest in 25 years. The quake, which struck at 9:41 AM local time, has claimed at least nine lives and injured dozens, with many still trapped in collapsed buildings and highway tunnels.

The earthquake's epicenter was located 28 kilometers northeast of Hualien County Hall at 1656 meters depth. It was followed by a magnitude 6.3 aftershock 18 minutes later, causing further damage and panic.

Rescue teams have been deployed to affected areas, including the Suhua Highway, where multiple tunnels collapsed, trapping approximately 700 people. Rescuers are working tirelessly to locate and free the stranded individuals.

The earthquake has caused significant damage to buildings, roads, and infrastructure. President Tsai Ing-wen has visited the affected areas and pledged government support for relief and recovery efforts.

International aid organizations have also offered assistance, with teams from Japan and China on standby to provide medical and engineering support.

Taiwan is no stranger to earthquakes, but the magnitude 7.4 event is the strongest to hit the island in over two decades. The last major earthquake, which measured 7.3 magnitude, occurred in 1999 and caused over 2,000 fatalities.

As rescue efforts continue, the death toll is expected to rise. The earthquake has served as a reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness and the resilience of the Taiwanese people in the face of adversity.
